10 content types — one overlay for everything

You know the answer. You just can't recall it right now.

That template you've written a dozen times. That shortcut you keep looking up. That color code that's somewhere in your notes. Every time, the same loop.

×

Without BrainRAM

  1. You're working on something
  2. You need that snippet/template/shortcut
  3. Open browser, search through notes
  4. Scroll past irrelevant results
  5. Find it buried in a doc somewhere
  6. Copy, switch back, paste
~30 seconds, every single time

With BrainRAM

  1. Hold Ctrl+Space
  2. Click the snippet. Done.
~1 second. Muscle memory.

<100ms — instant overlay, no loading spinners, no lag. It's there before you finish pressing the key.
🔒 100% offline — no accounts, no cloud, no tracking. Your snippets never leave your machine.
📝 Markdown + variables — rich text with {{fill-in-the-blank}} templates.
🎨 21 themes — Tokyo Night, Dracula, Nord, Catppuccin, and more. Or create your own.
📦 10 content types — text, code, links, files, images, colors, countdowns, secrets, showcase, and shell commands.
🖥 Cross-platform — Windows, macOS, and Linux. Built with Rust + Tauri, not Electron.
🪶 Featherweight — under 10 MB memory, near-zero CPU. Runs silently in your system tray.
🔧 Customizable hotkeys — change the global hotkey, overlay shortcuts, and page switches to whatever feels natural.
Keyboard-first — navigate pages, search, and copy without touching the mouse. Power users never leave the keyboard.

Why I built this

J

I built BrainRAM because I was tired of the same loop: know something, forget the exact detail, spend 30 seconds searching for it, find it, use it, forget it again next week.

It started as a personal tool — a way to pin my most-used references where I could always find them. No searching, no browser tabs, no context switching. Just hold a hotkey and grab what I need.

That loop isn't unique to me. Whether you're a developer looking up commands, a designer grabbing color codes, or a support agent sending the same response — we all have knowledge we know but can't always recall.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. BrainRAM is free for individuals during early access — all features, all platforms, no limits. A paid Team tier is planned for organizations, but the personal version will always be free.
No. BrainRAM works 100% offline. Your snippets are stored locally on your machine and never uploaded anywhere. The only network activity is an optional anonymous usage ping once per 30 days, which you can easily disable in Settings.
Windows (exe & msi), macOS (Apple Silicon & Intel), and Linux (AppImage & deb). Built with Rust + Tauri for native performance on every platform.
Absolutely. Create unlimited templates with custom names, colors, and emoji. Arrange snippets in a flexible grid, choose from 13 grid sizes, and organize however works for you. You can also import shared templates from other users.
Those are great for long-form notes. BrainRAM is for the stuff you need in under a second — the shortcut you can't remember, the template you paste 10 times a day, the color code you keep looking up. It's always one hotkey away, no browser tabs to manage.
BrainRAM isn't code-signed yet (indie project, certificates are expensive). On Windows, click "More info" then "Run anyway." On macOS, right-click the app and select "Open." This only happens once — subsequent launches are normal.

Linux

X11 required for global hotkey

BrainRAM's global hotkey requires an X11 session. Wayland does not yet support app-level global shortcuts on most desktops.

i3 / SwayWorks (i3)No hotkey (Sway)

Most distros let you choose X11 or Wayland at the login screen. If your hotkey doesn't work, log out and select the X11 session.

First launch: your OS may show a warning

Like most early-stage indie apps, BrainRAM is not yet code-signed — your OS may show a security prompt on first launch. Your snippets never leave your machine. Code signing certificates are coming soon.

Windows (SmartScreen)

  1. Click "More info" on the warning dialog
  2. Click "Run anyway"
  3. This only happens once — subsequent launches are unblocked

macOS (Gatekeeper)

  1. Open the app — macOS will say it’s from an unidentified developer
  2. Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security
  3. Click “Open Anyway” next to the BrainRAM message
  4. This only happens once — subsequent launches are unblocked
